My life changed drastically three months ago.
After years of grinding my way through freelance writing assignments and radio shows, I finally latched on full-time as a multimedia sports reporter at the Orlando Sentinel newspaper. There, the grind carries on.
I’ve been busy since the end of July on the high school and local sports beat at the Sentinel, which encompasses much more than you’d care to read about at this point.
The exciting part has been the high school football coverage we’ve been doing for the 76 area programs (yes, 76 high school football teams) through print and online video features.
Here’s a brief overview of what I’ve been up to: Along with compiling stats, blogging and keeping up with the other high school sports currently in season, I’ve been tasked with producing a weekly Super 16 rankings poll while also filling out a predictions chart, in which I pick winners of games involving teams throughout Central Florida.
You’d be surprised at how serious people take those picks and I’m sure you can imagine the kind of anxiety it might give me to make such decisions. You may also be surprised at how well I’ve been doing with those predictions thus far. I’m sure I’ll make time to boast about that more in-depth at another time.
The new job is demanding of my time, but I wouldn’t trade it in for anything at this point. Not even a quick nap.
Each Sunday I film a video segment with Charles King highlighting the Top 10 plays of the week. Every Tuesday Alicia DelGallo and I preview the biggest football matchups of the week. Legendary prep writer Buddy Collings oversees it all.
It’s been a rewarding three months, to say the least. And now that we’ve gotten re-acquainted, I’ll be sure to go back to posting random music videos and stuff about sports. You’ve officially been warned.
For now though, here’s a collection of links highlighting the on-camera stuff I’ve been subject to as of late.
