Melvin Gordon sets new FBS record with 408 yards rushing in one game

The rush toward the Heisman Trophy took a new and intriguing turn in favor of Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon over the weekend.

On Saturday Gordon set a new Football Bowl Subdivision record by rushing for 408 yards on 25 carries – in just three quarters of work – in a 59-24 win over No. 16 Nebraska. The previous mark of 406 yards was set by TCU’s LaDainian Tomlinson against UTEP on Nov. 20, 1999.

Gordon also scored four touchdowns, the last of which broke the rushing record and made the two fumbles he lost earlier in the game seem like a distant memory. Of his 25 carries, five went for at least 40 yards.

Carnahan Chronicles College Football Rankings (Week 6)

Go ahead, try to wrap your head around what took place last Saturday in the wild world of college football. A total of eight teams ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 suffered losses while three others suffered setbacks in Top 25 matchups. Needless to say, the Carnahan Chronicles College Football Rankings tumbled in spectacular fashion. But we’re back to pick up the pieces and add some new names and faces, of which many will surely fall in the coming weeks. Consider this a Top 10 dedicated to momentum each week based off level of upsets and voting by the AP:

#1 (1) Florida State (5-0) – Won 43-3 vs Wake Forest
#2 (2) Auburn (5-0) – Won 41-7 vs No. 15 LSU
#3 (8) Mississippi State (5-0) – Won 48-31 vs No. 6 Texas A&M
#4 (–) Mississippi (5-0) – Won 23-17 vs No. 3 Alabama
#5 (–) TCU (4-0) – Won 37-33 vs No. 4 Oklahoma
#6 (–) Notre Dame (5-0) – Won 17-14 vs No. 14 Stanford

Carnahan Chronicles College Football Rankings (Week 1)

Since Week 2 of the college football season is rapidly approaching, we’ll keep this short and sweet. After one week of action here’s the debut of the Carnahan Chronicles College Football Rankings:

1) Florida State (defending champs won 37-31 vs Oklahoma State)
2) Auburn (last year’s runner-up won 45-21 vs Arkansas)
3) Texas A&M (won 52-28 on road at No. 9 South Carolina)
4) Georgia (won 45-21 vs No. 16 Clemson)
5) LSU (won 28-24 vs No. 14 Wisconsin)
6) Oklahoma (won 48-16 vs Louisiana Tech)
7) Oregon (won 62-13 vs South Dakota)
8) Michigan State (won 45-7 vs Jacksonville State)
9) Alabama (won 33-23 vs West Virginia)
10) Ohio State (won 34-17 vs Navy)

NOTES: Because FSU & Auburn played for the title last season, they start atop these rankings. Texas A&M, Georgia & LSU won Top 25 matchups against teams in the Associated Press poll and because of that move into the Top 5 right off the bat. The benefit of the doubt was given to Oklahoma, Alabama & Ohio State due to their respective rankings in the AP poll this week, as was the case with Oregon & Michigan State, the winner of which will likely move up following Week 2. Ohio State is the only other team on this list playing a decent opponent this weekend (Virginia Tech). Also, expect the winner of Stanford & USC to climb into the Top 10 next week.

Champions: FDU-Florham Women’s Basketball Team Puts Logo in Forefront

Devil_Artwork__HEAD_Leave it to the women’s basketball team at New Jersey’s FDU-Florham to introduce me to one of the more sinister logos in college athletics.

Last month the Fairleigh Dickinson University Devils completed a perfect 33-0 season with an 80-72 win over Whitman College in the Division III title game played in Stevens Point, Wisconsin.

It’s the eighth time a women’s Division III basketball program has wrapped up an undefeated season.

I’ll have to find time to research whether those other perfect squads had an equally cool logo and nickname to go along with the hardware.
